Jay Lim

Age: 27
Occupation: Music Instructor
Star Sign: Virgo
Favourite singers: Josh Groban, Bjork, Madonna, Tori Amos, David Tao, Faye Wong

When was the first time you performed?
Secondary 3 when I joined my school talentime. I made it to the finals but I didn’t get any placing in the end.

How do you maintain your voice?

I sing scales and intervals almost everyday. They are a good way to work out the whole vocal ranges.

What is your favourite genre of music?
I like big ballads and musicals. The drama and feelings excite me a lot. On the other hand, I also like alternative rock and electronica, where most of the time, the songs are so ‘interesting’ that you can’t understand the lyrics but you are able to feel the emotions of the singer.

What album are you listening to right now?
Bjork’s Vespertine

Which album would your friends be surprised you own?
Hmm, probably a Jay Chou’s CD

What is your favourite food?
A Subway Sandwich

List some things you are good at doing.
I’m quite good at fixing things around the house. I can troubleshoot a PC.

Name one body part you are proud of and tell us why.
My hands; other than playing the keyboard and the cello, they can give a massage quite well, but that you can’t just take my word for it……

Tell us 3 things that we don’t know about you.
I actually i) cry in movies, ii) spend a lot of time dressing up to go out, iii) I have the same name as another local singer.

Describe a typical day in your life.
I wake up around 10a.m. watch a bit of TV, then dress up to go to work at my music school, in between I may pop over to the gym for a workout. I’ll usually finish 9-10pm, then go home for a late supper.

Use three words to describe yourself.
Quiet, Deep, and resourceful.

Tell us one thing about you that people are always surprised to learn about.
I don’t play basketball, at all. (Tall people don’t always do……)

What external qualities do you look for in a girl/guy?
I wouldn’t be looking for a ravishing beauty, but a girl needs to be confident about her body. Then again, I think I’m a leg person, slender and tone is good.

What animal best describes you?
Horse, like the saying, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. I can be accommodating, but I won’t budge when things clash with my principles. Then when it happens, I have the ability to swing free and run my way.

What are the 5 things you want to do before reaching 30?
I want to get a driving license, have my own concert with a full orchestra, write a book on singing, give my parents a great paid-for holiday, and find my soulmate.

What is the one thing you will do if you found out the world is going to end tomorrow?
Find a quiet garden and spend the time with my love ones.

If you could change one stereotype people had of you, what would it be?
I hope people don’t think I’m cold and aloft, just because I don’t like to talk much.

If you were stranded on an island, what are the 3 things you would bring with you?
A tent, lots of water, and a working keyboard.

What made you join this competition?
I have a strong feeling this is the year I need to make a name for myself, and Singapore Idol come as the right platform to further my music career.

Who is your favourite judge, and why?
Ken Lim, because his words, though profound at times, are alerts for me that I need to do something to improve.
